BJ Novak is the Swiss Army knife of the entertainment industry—a screen writer, director, and comic actor known for his work on the television series The Office, which he also helped produce and direct, films like Quentin Taratino’s Inglorious Basterds, and most recently, his book of comic essays and stories, One More Thing.
SELECTED SHORTS invited Novak to host an evening of readings from One More Thing, and this program includes three of his pieces, presented guest host Jane Curtin.
First, “The Rematch” a re-mix of the “Tortoise and the Hare” fable for the self-help age. Novak says that the story always bothered him, and that his version is closer to what it’s like to be an animal today. Novak reads it himself. Next, The Daily Show’s Aasif Mandvi, Rent star Anthony Rapp, and Novak perform Novak’s play on words “Great Writers Steal.” You’ll never hear this trite phrase the same way again!
Novak finishes the show with his reading of “Kellogg’s, (or: The Last Wholesome Fantasy of the Middle-School Boy)”. It features a frustrated teenager, his high-minded parents, and a brand-name breakfast cereal, in a gently comic coming-of-age story about finding out who you really are.
